Who doesn’t love a long walk on the beach? Whether it’s early in the morning just in time for a sunrise, or in the lazy evening hours when the sky is a mixture of orange, blue, and purple, a beach walk is all but required on a Hatteras Island vacation.
The lure of an oceanside stroll is certainly hard to beat, but for folks who love nothing more than a long, leisurely walk to relax and get a little exercise, there are plenty of places on and off the sand to discover. Visitors and locals alike have been known to rake in the shells after a good storm, or just when the tides are right. But once you have a bucket of shells to bring home, what do you do? Part of the reason for the popularity of seashells is that they are fabulous raw materials for craft projects. Young and old alike, everyone can enjoy a rainy afternoon sorting through their Outer Banks shells and creating a homemade souvenir that they can use as the perfect present, decorate a beach home, or simply enjoy as a fond memory of their trip to Hatteras Island. ‘Tis the season to whip up a little comfort food after a chilly day of fishing, and on Hatteras Island, the signature soup of choice is, naturally, Hatteras Style Clam Chowder.
Unlike Manhattan and New England varieties, Hatteras chowder is a clear broth with just a few low key ingredients, but the simplicity of the soup really brings out the clam flavor. Most every restaurant on the island has their own spin on the recipe, and chowder cook-offs for local bragging rights are essential at Outer Banks festivals and events, like the annual Day at the Docks celebration in Hatteras Village. The Hatteras Village Christmas Parade enjoyed a sunny start on Saturday, Dec. 13, with cool 50 degree weather and an even cooler breeze. But the chill in the air didn’t stop several hundred locals and visitors from lining along NC Highway 12 in between Teach’s Lair marina and the Hatteras Drive-in to cheer on the floats. The Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament has been held every November since 1958. In 2008, 120 Teams of six members each from all over the East Coast were invited to participate in the tournament, and they fished in zones in a morning session and an afternoon session for two days, with a Sunday banquet and awards ceremony culminating the event.
