“Ashley (Shiralee’s daughter) and I were on the beach and she found a starfish. We didn’t realize when she picked it up that it was still alive! I had never seen a live starfish before. She gently turned it over and I saw it moving. That was the coolest thing I had ever seen!”


Kitty Hawk Kites to Host First Annual Kiteboarding Race

After opening the Kitty Hawk Kites Kiteboarding Resort in Waves, NC last fall, Kitty Hawk Kites is planning to host the inaugural kiteboarding race, beginning April 25 and continuing through May 2.

Kitty Hawk Kites and KiteUS are co-sponsoring this week long event and are expecting a large number of participants. Kiteboarders from across the country will be in attendance to compete on Hatteras Island, one of the best locations in the country for kiteboarding. Continue reading


German Specialists Touring Hatteras Island

Surf or Sound Realty, in conjunction with The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau and the NC Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development, are hosting a group of German vacation package specialists from the key target markets for our state in German Speaking Europe or GSE (Germany, Austria and Switzerland).

These vacation specialists or tour operators specialize in visitors to the US, many now looking to uncover some of America’s other travel destinations having visited typical first-time U.S. travel destinations such as New York City, Las Vegas, and beaches in Florida and California. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse To Open Friday, April 17

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will open to the public for climbing from April 17 through Columbus Day, October 12, 2009. Climbing fees for the Lighthouse will be $7 per adult, and $3.50 for children under 12 and senior citizens.

The opening day of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will continue to be a fee-free day, as it has in the past, for local community members to climb the Lighthouse. Continue reading


Frisco Museum offering pine-needle basket workshop

Creating baskets from natural materials is one of the oldest known crafts. Pine basketry dates back more than 9,000 years, before crafters were making pottery. For Hatteras Island Native Americans, pine needle baskets served many utilitarian and decorative purposes, and over the years, the creation of pine needle baskets has developed into an intricate and beautiful art form.
