Three rehabilitated turtles return to the sea

Cape Hatteras listed as one of the top 10 beaches in America

Hatteras Island has once again made renowned “Dr. Beach’s 10 Best Beaches in America” list, with the Cape Hatteras beach ranking #7 for 2009.

Dr Beach, also known as Dr. Leatherman, is considered the national authority on pristine beaches, and bases his annual selections of the ten best beaches on 50 criteria, including water quality and temperature, cleanliness, weather, sand, safety and facilities. Continue reading

Free NC Symphony Concert on the Outer Banks

The Outer Banks welcomes for the eighth year the North Carolina Symphony Summer Pops Concert at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo on June 19, 2009. Once again, this event is free to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Gates open at 6 p.m. with a pre-show program by the Concert Chorale of the Outer Banks at 7 p.m. The NC Symphony program begins at 8 p.m. Continue reading

Outdoor painting workshop set for May at SeaWorthy Gallery

SeaWorthy Gallery in Hatteras village will sponsor a three-day “Plein Air” outdoor painting workshop on May 19-21 from 9 until 4 p.m. each day. The workshop will focus on marshes, boats, beaches, cottages, and other coastal scenes. All media is welcome, but the demonstrations will be done in watercolor. Class size is limited, so the instructor can give personal attention to each student. A brief critique will conclude each painting day. Continue reading

National Park Service announces May Programs

During May, the National Park Service Outer Banks Group will be providing scheduled public programs for the pre-summer season at Wright Brothers National Memorial, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Affordable Inshore Fishing Trips will reel in the whole family

Every year, Hatteras Island attracts countless offshore charter fishermen who take advantage of the island’s proximity to the Gulf Stream to enjoy a long day of some hard fishing. But fishing beginners and families who just want a taste of the charter experience, don’t have to plan a full day in the Gulf Stream to get their feet wet.

A number of local charter businesses, like locally renowned Got ‘Em Charters, based in Hatteras Village, offer inshore charter fishing trips for a full or half day of fishing in the ocean or sound waters. Continue reading

Children’s Book Week is May 11-17

The Dare County Library is celebrating National Children’s Book Week from May 11-17 with fun programs for children of all ages.

The regular preschool story times this week will be a special “Teddy Bear Days.” Story time children are invited to bring their favorite teddy bear with them to story time – cute or cuddly, fat or funny, big or little, old or new. There will be a teddy bear picnic, a teddy bear parade and plenty of teddy bear fun.Preschool story times at the Hatteras Library are on Tuesdays for 3-5 year olds from 11 until 11:30 a.m.

Also during this week, a special “American Girl Tea Party” will be held at the Hatteras Village Library. School-age girls can come dressed as their favorite American Girl and/or bring their own American Girl doll. Continue reading
