For the past month, the bluefin bite has been outstanding off the cost of Hatteras Island. According to Ric Burnley, writer and frequent Hatteras Island fishermen, boats running to the edge of the Gulf Stream have been catching 100- to 200-pound bluefin by chunking, jigging, trolling – even throwing top water poppers. Author and North Carolina State professor Tim Hatcher is requesting help from locals and longtime visitors alike on telling the story of Hatteras Island life.
He is working on a new book about people who have worked and lived along the North Carolina coast and how their lives have changed over the decades. Hatcher is writing the book because, he says, “A way of living, working and raising a family has changed for the people who have deep roots in the sands of the North Carolina coast. People who have for a long time called the coast their home have a story to tell about the way life used to be. It’s that story that needs to be told”. Continue reading

The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation’s anticipated annual dance will be a tribute to the 10th anniversary of the foundation and its annual fundraiser.
Every year the Cancer Foundation dance has a new theme, from pirates to the roaring 20s, encouraging participants to dress up in costume and share in the fun. To mark this milestone, the theme of this year’s dance is “Toast to 10 Years of Sharing and Caring.” Continue reading
