Taking a Step for the Cure on Hatteras Island

On April 29th, 2011, the staff at Surf or Sound Realty and members of the community decided to Take a Step for the cure. It was an effort to raise funds for the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation that offers financial help to island residents fighting cancer. The walk began at Ramp 23 in Salvo and ended in Mirlo Beach – about 5 miles.

The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation (HICF) was founded in 2000 by Laney Howell who lost her battle with cancer in 2001. During her four and a half years of treatment after she had surgery in 1997, Laney received great support from Hatteras Island residents who brought meals, cleaned her home, cared for her family and drove her to medical appointments in Elizabeth City and Norfolk. She wanted to give back to the community by creating the cancer foundation to help patients on the island.

Today HICF continues to help island cancer patients with medical expenses not reimbursed by insurance and travel expenses to medical centers for cancer treatment. In addition to financial support, HICF volunteers help with everyday chores such as yard work, light housekeeping, shopping, and meal preparation.

Surf or Sound Realty wants to support the efforts of the HICF by giving back to the Hatteras Island community. Please support our effort to raise funds for this great cause by sending your donations to the HICF. To make a donation please make checks payable to the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation. You can mail the checks directly to the foundation Post Office Box 442, Hatteras, NC 27943. You can also make donations online by going to http://hicf.org/. The donations are tax deductible.

Check out the photos from the walk on our Facebook page!

Surf or Sound is Taking a Step for the Cure!

Surf or Sound Realty’s staff along with other members of the community will be walking to raise funds for the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation that offers financial help to island residents fighting cancer. The walk is scheduled for April 29, 2011 at 6am starting from Ramp 23 in Salvo and ending in Mirlo Beach. The walk is about 5 miles long and anyone is welcome to join.

There is a great need today for this support in the Hatteras Island Community. Angie Ballance is a local resident who has been recently diagnosed with breast cancer. She is only 32 years old and is married with two young daughters, Karlene and Kimber. Her parents work and live here on the island as well. Her husband works in Frisco at the Frisco Rod and Gun and Angie is a dental assistant at Dr. Slagle’s office in Frisco.

Angie has started a blog to journal her experience with being diagnosed with breast cancer. It offers a very close to home example of what all men and women and their families have to go through in their fight against cancer. In Angie’s words, “I want young women to be aware of the importance of doing self exams, and if it takes my going through this to save someone else’s life, then maybe that is God’s plan.” You can visit her blog at http://keepingballance.blogspot.com/.

You are welcome to drop the checks off at our two offices in Avon or Salvo as well for your convenience. There will be buckets available for donations at multiple Hatteras Island businesses. When making your donation, please mention your support of “Surf or Sound Taking a Step for the Cure”.

Thank you for your support and we hope to see you at the walk!

Visit The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in the Moonlight

Every year the National Park Service offers an amazing chance to experience the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in the moonlight. The NPS will be offering Full Moon Tours of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse the evening of April 17 to the visiting public and local communities.

Two tours will be given, one at 7:30 p.m. and a second at 8:30 p.m., and each tour is limited to 30 people. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Full Moon Tour ticket sales will start on Friday, April 15. The lighthouse ticket booth is open from 8:15 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. daily. Full Moon Tour tickets are non-refundable.

As there are no lights inside the lighthouse, climbers will navigate the 257 stair staircase using handheld flashlights. During the climb, park rangers will provide stories of the arduous duties of the lighthouse keeper. From the watch room, visitors will be able to view the light up close and in motion and hear of the operation of the beacon, past and present – a truly unique experience. Outside on the lighthouse balcony (weather permitting) climbers will get a glimpse of what the lighthouse keepers of old were able to experience – seeing that beam of light reaching out to sea and the startling reflection of the newly risen moon on the ocean.

Things to know:
1. Full Moon Tour tickets, limited to the first 60 purchasers, must be purchased in person, in advance, at the lighthouse ticket booth. Full Moon Tour ticket sales will begin Friday, April 15. It is anticipated that tickets will sell out early. Standard admissions fees apply – $7 for adults, and $3.50 for children (11 and under) as well as seniors (62 and older). The lighthouse ticket booth, located at the lighthouse site, is open from 8:15 a.m. – 4:40 p.m. daily.

2. Each participant must bring a handheld flashlight with fresh, serviceable batteries.

3. All participants are required to be at least 42 inches tall and must climb the steps on their own – they can not be carried! If unsure, check with the park rangers before purchasing your non-refundable ticket. Also, keep in mind that some youngsters, although meeting height requirements, may not enjoy the dimly lit, sometimes claustrophobic environment.

4. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

5. For safety reasons, all participants must climb and descend with the group. No exceptions.

6. Know your limitations! The lighthouse is tall, dark, often hot, humid, and can be a challenge to climb. There are no internal lights or air conditioning.

7. All routine lighthouse safety requirements, as well as restrictions to eating, drinking, gum etc., apply. This information will be provided to you when you purchase your ticket.

8. Tickets are non-refundable. If the program is cancelled due to weather, the ticket holder may exchange the ticket the following morning, April 18, between the hours of 8:15 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. for a replacement ticket useable only on April 18. This ticket will be for day climbing only.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Moonlight Tours – just one of the many things to experience on Hatteras Island!
